INEC: Senate Approves Extra ₦30 Billion for INEC 2027 Elections

The Senate Committee on Electoral Matters has recommended an additional ₦30 billion allocation for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to strengthen preparations for the 2027 general elections in Nigeria.

This proposed boost raises INEC’s total budget request from its original ₦873.78 billion to approximately ₦903.78 billion, addressing critical gaps in funding for a credible, transparent, and nationwide electoral process.

Why the Extra ₦30 Billion? The committee emphasized that the supplementary funds are primarily targeted at:

  • Enhancing logistics for efficient nationwide polling and material distribution.
  • Strengthening operational capacity to handle large-scale deployment of personnel and equipment.
  • Mitigating anticipated challenges, including inflation-driven cost increases, technology upgrades (such as BVAS and IReV systems), and potential unforeseen expenses.

INEC’s initial proposal already outlined major spending areas, including operations, administration, technology enhancements, capital projects, and miscellaneous costs.

The additional allocation aims to close shortfalls identified during budget defense sessions before the National Assembly.

Implications for the 2027 Elections

With Nigeria’s elections scheduled for February 2027 (presidential and National Assembly) and subsequent governorship and state assembly polls, adequate early funding is vital. This move signals lawmakers’ commitment to supporting INEC in delivering free, fair, and timely elections amid rising operational demands and recent updates to the Electoral Act (including provisions for financial autonomy and adjusted campaign spending limits).

The recommendation now advances to the Appropriations Committee for further review and inclusion in the broader 2026 budget framework, pending final National Assembly approval and presidential assent.

This development underscores ongoing efforts to build public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system by ensuring INEC has the resources needed for seamless execution.
