BREAKING: N100m Transfer to IGP Egbetokun’s Son Was Banking Error – Police Clarify, Funds Returned”

In a swift response to circulating allegations, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has officially stated that a ₦100 million transfer into the personal bank account of Victor Egbetokun, son of outgoing Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun was purely a banking mistake and has been fully reversed.

The clarification came from the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on February 24, 2026.

According to Hundeyin, Victor Egbetokun personally reported the unexpected deposit upon noticing it in his account. He immediately instructed his accounts officer to reverse the funds, which were promptly returned to the source identified in reports as the Anambra State Government’s security vote account.

“He said he saw N100 million in his account, and he told his accounts officer to reverse the money immediately, which he did,” Hundeyin explained. The police spokesperson emphasized that bank statements were reviewed, confirming the reversal occurred shortly after discovery, with the transaction described as an error in payment processing.

The issue surfaced following online reports alleging improper receipt of funds from Anambra State’s security vote amid ongoing security challenges in the state. The NPF described these claims as misleading, insisting the matter was a clerical or banking error rather than any deliberate act. The funds were reportedly reversed in tranches back to the Anambra State account, with documentation supporting the reversal dated late September 2025 in some accounts.

This incident highlights the importance of vigilance in financial transactions and quick corrective action when errors occur. The NPF maintains that no impropriety was involved, and the outgoing IGP’s family acted responsibly by flagging and refunding the erroneous payment without delay.

As Nigeria’s law enforcement leadership transitions, such clarifications aim to maintain public trust and transparency in official matters. The force has reiterated its commitment to integrity at all levels.
