In a strong condemnation of rising political violence in Nigeria, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has called for an immediate and comprehensive investigation by security agencies into the reported attack on former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party leader Peter Obi, alongside former APC National Chairman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.
The incident occurred in Benin City, Edo State, during a political engagement involving Obi, Odigie-Oyegun, and other African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftains.
Reports describe the event as a coordinated assault, with armed individuals allegedly following the group from an ADC secretariat event to Odigie-Oyegun’s residence, where gunfire damaged vehicles and targeted the gate in what has been labeled an attempted assassination. Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan described the attack as “deeply disturbing” and unacceptable in any democracy. She emphasized that politics must never descend into violence, intimidation, or threats against opponents.
In her statement, she warned that such reckless actions by overzealous political actors potentially aimed at impressing leaders or showing loyalty—undermine national unity and the foundations of democratic competition.
