The Lagere Flyover, a landmark ₦14 billion (approximately N14.9 billion) project and 17 complementary road initiatives are set to end years of traffic chaos and poor accessibility, according to high-ranking traditional leaders.
The Obalufe of Ile-Ife, Oba Idowu Adediwura (second-in-command to the Ooni of Ife), praised Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration for these developments.
He described past road conditions as “unfortunate and embarrassing,” especially for international visitors and pilgrims arriving in the historic town only to face impassable or dilapidated routes. These upgrades, he noted, will promote Yoruba culture, restore dignity to Ile-Ife, and bring global honor to its status as the origin of the Yoruba people.
Key Highlights of the Projects
- Lagere Flyover Bridge: Valued at ₦14.9 billion and executed by Sammya Nigeria Limited, this iconic structure (the first of its kind in Ile-Ife) is designed to eliminate chronic gridlock at the busy Lagere axis, improve connectivity between key economic zones, and boost local commerce.
- 17 Township Road Projects: These include rehabilitations and constructions such as Iredunmi–Oke Ijan Road, Oriyangi–St. John’s Road, Manchester–Igboya Road, Olurin–Omi Okun Road, Ife City Benediction Road, London Street–Iremo Road, Agric Road Opa, and several others in areas like Modakeke and Ifetedo.
Indigenes, residents, and stakeholders have hailed the governor’s commitment to completing projects without abandonment a departure from previous administrations. The flyover is reportedly nearing advanced stages (around 80% completion in recent updates), signaling timely delivery and quality execution.
These investments not only ease daily mobility for residents but also position Ile-Ife for greater tourism, cultural festivals, and economic growth. As the Obalufe emphasized, the projects save the ancient city from “global embarrassment” while honoring its heritage.
